At college, with no one looking over your shoulder, you need to work extra-hard to practice self-control. Fortunately, you don't have to go it alone.

Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
2 Timothy 2:22

Freedom. You've been waiting a long time for it, and now it's just around the corner. As you prepare to leave for college and start living life on your own, remember the apostle Paul's advice to Timothy, a young man heading out to continue Paul's ministry.

Paul reminded Timothy that the world can make life difficult for young people trying to follow God. But with faith, Christian fellowship and a lot of self-control, Paul knew Timothy could stand strong and change the world. He did, and so can you!

Over the next few weeks, use these devotional thoughts, Scripture passages and questions to learn more about practicing self-control.

Your Social Life

College life is filled with temptations. But God tells us that with his help, we can resist whatever the world throws at us.

Check out Mark 14:32-38; Luke 4:1-13; 1 Corinthians 10:12-13; Hebrews 2:17-18.

  • What does it mean to be alert to temptation? How can you "watch and pray" to keep from being tempted? Think about a time you were tempted. How could self-control have helped you resist that temptation? Now think about the temptations you might face at college. How can you practice self-control in those situations? Make a commitment to find an accountability buddy at college—someone who can help you resist temptation.
Your Academic Life

When there's no one around to check up on you, it's easy to let your homework slide or to sleep through a class. But God tells us to be diligent and do our best all the time, no matter who is or isn't watching.

Check out Proverbs 6:6-11; Ephesians 5:15-16; Colossians 4:5; 2 Thessalonians 3:6-15.

  • Why is it so easy to be lazy? Think about a time you didn't want to do something. What motivated you to finally do it? Why does God want us to make the most of every opportunity? Think about your current study habits. What's working? What isn't? What effective study habits can you keep using when you get to college?
Your Spiritual Life

It takes effort to get plugged in spiritually once you get to college. But the growth you'll experience is worth it.

Check out Psalm 119:9-48; Romans 12:1-21; 1 Corinthians 12:12-25; Philippians 4:6-9; Hebrews 4:12-13.

  • Why is it so important to pray and read the Bible every day? How can Christian fellowship help you grow in your faith? Make a commitment to find, and faithfully attend, a church once you get to college. Talk to your parents or youth pastor about ways to find a church where you can really grow. Think about ways the gifts God has given you can add to the life of your college and the community around you.
