Missions Minded

Andrew Miller, '08 graduate
Huntington University, Indiana
Major: Missions

In his junior year of high school, Andrew Miller felt a call to ministry. "That's when I discovered Huntington and their really cool program called PRIME." PRIME (Practical Research and Immersion in Ministry Effectiveness) is a six-month internship where students learn off campus while still earning credit.

"I spent two months in Northern Ireland helping with community outreach programs," he said. "I was part of the Street Reach Team. Among other outreaches, we'd deliver newspapers to the community wrapped in a ring that said, 'This is a free gift, because Jesus loves you.'" Andrew also spent time ministering to youth. "During afternoons, we'd get them involved in go-karts, canoeing, and banana boat competitions," he said. "And at night we'd hold soccer, pool, or video game tournaments for the whole family."

After that program ended, Andrew spent the last four months of the internship in Manchester, England, doing school outreach. "It totally blew me away that we got to go into public schools and do 20-minute Bible presentations," he said.

Europe and missions stay at the forefront of Andrew's mind. "God has given me such a call and a passion," he said. "I can't wait to go back."

Heart for the Hurting

Laura Meyers, '08 graduate
Asbury College, Wilmore, Kentucky
Major: Social work

When she was 12, Laura Meyers went on life-changing mission trips to India and the Dominican Republic. Seeing girls as young as her lined up for prostitution affected her deeply. "Seeing them broke my heart," she said.

That experience led Laura to major in social work and volunteer during college with the Bluegrass Rape Crisis Center. At the center, she was the comforting voice on the other end of the hotline. She would also meet victims of abuse at the local hospital to help them through the process.

During college, Laura also worked with the Human Trafficking Task Force in Lexington, Kentucky. "Asbury has literally opened so many doors for me in education and service," she said. "And God has given me such a passion to help these women, and many times, children."

God has also given Laura a passion for world missions. After graduating from Asbury, she joined the World Race, part of the organization Adventures in Mission. "I'm so excited," she said. "I will get to travel all over the world, to 11 different countries in 11 months, sharing the love of Jesus."

Online Entrepreneur

Nathan Beach, '08 graduate
Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Michigan
Major: Computer science

In middle school, Nathan Beach started building websites for fun. And then, it became something more than that. "I love working on computers, designing websites, and reaching others for Christ," he said. "So I wanted to incorporate all three into a website that would help people."

That's when he came up with the idea for Christ Notes (christnotes.org). "The website started out very basic in the beginning," Nathan admits. But with the education and direction he received at Calvin, his website has become one of Google's top three listings when searching with the keywords "Bible Search." Nathan's site offers the Bible in six translations, gets 1.4 million page views per month, and delivers daily Bible verses via e-mail to more than 75,000 members. "It all started with my parents encouraging me to use my gifts and talents," he said. And as for the future, he wants to continue improving the website so it offers more features and services.
